COSCO SHIPPING Holdings leverages the reactivation of Segamat Inland Port in Malaysia to forge new sea-rail intermodal transport channel, creating new path for cross-border multimodal transport route

The recent reactivation of the Segamat Inland Port marks a significant upgrade in regional inland logistics and opens up a new path for the development of cross-border multimodal transport in Malaysia.

Located in northern Johor, the Segamat Inland Port is a key logistics hub connecting inland industrial clusters with Port Klang. The resumption of its operation heralds a new phase of development of Malaysia's inland logistics network. The reactivation of the port will unleash the economic potential of northern Johor, as it taps into the rail freight network to build the cross-border channels between Port Klang, the hinterland in West Malaysia and Thailand. A comprehensive cross-border multimodal transport system is thus established, which greatly boosts Malaysia’s overall competitiveness in logistics.

As a key intermodal transport services provider at the port, COSCO SHIPPING Lines (Malaysia)has made thorough preparations for new sea-rail intermodal transport model. A brand-new logistics route linking the hinterland with the seaport is created: cargoes can be directly transited by rail to the Segamat Inland Port for container stuffing, and containers are then directly transported by rail to the Port Klang West for loading onto ocean-going vessels. Seamless end-to-end container flow is thus achieved. This new dedicated sea-rail transport corridor addresses the shortcomings of traditional road freight transportation, which significantly reduces the transshipment time, alleviates the freight pressure on highway network, and provides local foreign trade enterprises with efficient, low-carbon and one-stop supply chain solutions.

In the initial stage of operation, the company will run two dedicated freight trains per week, providing customers with stable and reliable freight services. As the rail transport can handle large volumes of cargoes at lower costs with low-carbon emissions, this sea-rail intermodal transport solution enables the transformation of bulk freight from road transport to rail transport. The road congestion and carbon emission problem arising from road transport can thus be continuously reduced, thereby accelerating the development of green and sustainable supply chain in Malaysia.
