COSCO SHIPPING Lines has recently launched a new sea-air intermodal transportation channel for China-Brazil cargoes via Peru. A batch of goods originating from a Chinese e-commerce platform were first shipped from Shanghai to the Port of Chancay in Peru by sea and were then successfully transited from Chancay to Sao Paulo by air. It takes only 30 days for the whole journey. This new route provides shippers an economical and time-saving logistics solution. It not only enables them to better manage the transportation costs through transcontinental shipping, but also allows them to reduce the transit time in South America with the support of air transport. The Chinese exporters thus gain access to a new channel to expand into the South American market.

The aforementioned sea-air intermodal transportation service was jointly developed by the Chancay project team of COSCO SHIPPING Lines (a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Holdings) and the aviation logistics division under COSCO SHIPPING Logistics & Supply Chain Management (a sister company of COSCO SHIPPING Lines). Leveraging the Port of Chancay as a transit hub, it effectively links up the direct maritime route between “Shanghai–Chancay” with the airfreight route between Peru and Brazil, hence opening up a new sea-air intermodal channel for domestic e-commerce goods to enter the Brazilian market. After the first sea-freight shipment from Shanghai arrived at the Port of Chancay, it took only 48 hours to complete all cargo transfer operations at the port, thereby enabling seamless connectivity for direct air freight to Sao Paulo Airport.

In the future, COSCO SHIPPING Holdings will continue to enhance the efficiency for cargo transfer and connectivity at each part of the transportation channel. Leveraging the Port of Chancay as a hub, we will extend sea-air intermodal transportation service to other regions in South America, offering safer, more efficient and convenient logistics services to facilitate the development of economic and trade exchanges between China and Latin America.
